Major Peter Michael Roney CD (Retired)
RONEY: Major Peter Michael - It is with great sadness we announce Peter passed away peacefully at Norfolk General Hospital on Saturday, January 8, 2022 in his 87th year. He is survived by his loving daughter and caregiver, Karen Roney, and fondly remembered by Suzanne Shostal his best friend and companion. Peter was the youngest son of the late William and Irene Roney of Norfolk County; and predeceased by his brother, Lt. Col. William Roney Jr., and his three older sisters, Jean Russel, Margaret “Pug” Anderson and Maxine Marshall. “Uncle Pete” is lovingly remembered by numerous nieces and nephews from across Ontario and British Columbia, all of whom occupied their own special place in his huge heart. Peter formed special bonds with his nephew, Greg Russel of Simcoe and his first cousin, the late Inda Adams and her husband, Jim Adams, and their children. Peter is also fondly remembered by his niece, Dr. Denise Marshall, who provided care and guidance through the final chapter of his earthly journey. After graduating from Simcoe High School in the early 50’s, Pete worked for the Roney family business, cutting and selling lumber and farming Christmas trees. He later owned and operated Roney Office Equipment in downtown Simcoe for more than 20 years. Following a brief stint as a Bylaw Officer in Otterville, Pete worked for the LCBO in Waterford for almost a decade where he was loved by many. Pete was well respected during his long-standing career as a Reservist in the Canadian Army and as Officer Commanding for the 69th Battery of the 56th Field Regiment RCA in Simcoe; as an ‘Organizer Extraordinaire’ in and around the Officers’ Mess; and as founder of the Norfolk Scotch Society. Throughout his long and active life, Pete forged many longstanding, meaningful relationships with a vast cross-section of people. He had a gift for treating everyone around him with respect and dignity and will be memorialized as a true gentleman. Pete was the consummate ‘team player’. This was exhibited in a variety of milieus including the gymnasium (Senior Basketball MVP at SHS), the card table (exceptional Duplicate Bridge player and sneaky-good poker player) and at the games table (champion trivia player). Pete even left his mark in the Turks and Caicos Islands hosting a private Scotch Tasting where the Premiere attended. But most importantly, Pete will be remembered by all who knew and loved him as a true and loyal friend with a heart of gold. Pete was famous for his back porch BBQs and his fine culinary skills. Pete’s door was always open, as was his kitchen; no one ever left Pete’s thirsty or hungry. His fondness for felines was illustrated by the many strays he rescued over the years, and with special thanks to his ‘Support Chihuahua’ MJ. Last, but certainly not least, Pete will be sorely missed by “Pete’s Peeps”: Chris Thomas, Kent Nielson, Kim Bezanson, George Saab, and Dustin Wakeford, who’s long standing friendships made the last two years remarkable for Pete during the Covid isolation. Pete will have a service and a send off in the Spring once Covid regulations have loosened. For those wishing to make a memorial donation in Peter’s memory they are asked to consider the Alzheimer Society, 645 Norfolk St N, Simcoe, Ontario N3Y 3R2. Cremation has taken place.
