Obituary for David Hynes

HYNES: Dr David Michael who recently celebrated his 86th birthday passed peacefully in the home he loved, surrounded by his family on September 26th, 2022. David is survived by his loving wife, Terry, who cared for him in his last days and with whom he shared a love of dogs, reading, music, travelling the world and a good glass of wine.

They celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary this past April where David enjoyed his last holiday in the warmth of the sun. David will be missed by his children, Daniela (Terry Kell), Nicolas (Mary Knapp) and Claire (Jim McKinney), his stepchildren Amber and Richard, his 13 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren. Everyone will miss David’s dry British sense of humor, his stories about his incredible life growing up in England and David’s fascinating, accomplished career. David graduated from Cambridge University in 1961 and attended medical school at the University of London where he qualified as an Internist and a Radiologist. His expertise brought his family to Canada where he was the Chief of Radiology at McMaster University in Hamilton. He then moved to St. Joseph’s Health Centre in Toronto where he was Chief of Radiology, VP Medical Affairs and Chief of Staff. He never stopped learning, was a deep thinker and was celebrated for his leadership and medical innovations, most notably his contribution to the development of digital imaging.

David’s life will be memorialized with a small family and friend celebration of life. In lieu of flowers, for those wishing to make a memorial donation in memory of David they are asked to consider the St. Joseph’s Health Centre, 30 The Queensway, Toronto, Ontario, M6R 1B5. David was known for a number of wise phrases over his life and there is one that is pertinent today. Whenever he was asked what he wanted for his birthday or Christmas, he would say, I want peace and quiet.
David, Dad, Grandpa, Great Grandpa we love you. You now have eternal peace and quiet.
