Obituary for Albert Matthews

MATTHEWS: Albert (Bert) - Passed away peacefully after a brief illness at Joseph Brant Hospital, Burlington on March 23, 2022, at the age of 88. Bert is survived by his dear wife of 62 years, Jutta Susanne Lore “Susan” Matthews (nee Gutschmidt) and his three children James (Kerri), Nancy (Jeff), David (Cathy) and his three grandchildren Kyle, Logan and Owen. Bert was born and raised in the Smethwick suburb of Birmingham, England where, in his late teens, he worked as a pattern maker at the Birmid Foundry before completing three years in the British Airborne Forces. He then emigrated to Montreal, Canada together with a good friend in 1957 when he spent that summer working on the Distant Early Warning (DEW) line in Frobisher Bay (now Nunavut). In 1959 Bert accepted a Credit Manager position with Cyanamid Canada where he worked until his retirement in 1993. In 1957 Bert was introduced by a mutual friend to the love of his life, Susan. They were married on June 27, 1959 and built their lives together with their three children living in the Montreal area. In 1979 the family relocated to Scarborough, Ontario where they lived until 1994 when Bert and Susan retired to Port Dover, Ontario. In September of 2021 they moved into a retirement community in Burlington, Ontario. Bert loved to tell tall tales and making things with his hands. He was an accomplished wood worker, made plenty of backyard skating rinks and even built his own A-frame cottage on Lac Bibite in Quebec. Retirement gave Bert more time to pursue his love of woodworking, golf, reading and history. He was also actively involved in the Lions Club, the Royal Canadian Legion and the British Airborne Forces Association but, most of all, he loved spending time with his family. In keeping with his wishes, there will be no memorial service or celebration of life. Instead, please consider playing a round of golf or raising a dram of scotch in his memory. Bert would have liked that. SERENITY BURIAL & CREMATION SERVICES INC., 361 Main Street, Port Dover, Ontario N0A 1N0 (226) 290-9093 have been entrusted with the arrangements.
